One of my earliest and most vivid memories of campaigns is when I almost quit. I had maybe three campaigns under my belt, absolutely loved the work and had just moved (again) to another random state and realized I had no health insurance and $4.32/day to live off until my first paycheck from my new job, which would end in eight months.
I’d started doing campaigns as a fluke but soon grew to love the work and still believe in the same issues and causes I did then (with a dash of the realism age tends to bring thrown in).
Today I still try to help and talk to as many people as I can who are just getting involved in this. But now at least I have something to point them to, something that wasn’t there for me, Democratic GAIN.
The whole giving back that everyone talks about doing? Yours can start now with the simple act of contributing $200 – or the most you can afford – to Democratic GAIN through this website.
Democratic GAIN started because we, as a party and as progressives weren’t smart about keeping the core of staff engaged in the process. Every two years, when the young Republicans were absorbed by the Leadership Institute, we would send our staff off into the wind, wishing them luck and telling them to come back in 6-12 months. Many didn’t and we lost potentially great future senior staff.
I’ve been involved in GAIN almost from the beginning, I’ve been a trainer at their events, helped raise money but now it is time to give. This is harder to raise money for because, let’s face it, with GAIN we’re talking about more than the trainings and the manuals and the job boards. We’re talking about building up the human resource base of our movement. And those of you who’ve raised money know that infrastructure isn’t an easy thing to raise money for – it isn’t sexy.
But it is important and you know it, because like me you stayed in, and made it to a place in your life where you can afford to give a little back. GAIN is a good place to do that.
One more thing—I’ll let you off the hook, IF you start your own Raising Tree page for Democratic GAIN, and commit to raising $1,000 on your own. If you do that you only have to commit $25 to my page, and when you send me your notice, I’ll contribute $25 to your page.
